View Full Version : DENON ROTARY, TIRED OF WAITING DID IT MYSELF
The title says it all....
I need a rotary, when is Denon gonna get off there ass and make one????
Or do I need to save up for the Rane 2016 and expansion pack...
Sorry Doc... I really can't afford the Phazon even though people say it is the "holy grail" of rotaries....

I need a rotary, when is Denon gonna get off there ass and make one????
Nope, not anytime soon.
The Rane, Crest, A&H does not sell that well despite what you may think.
 I never said they would be the best sellers, but that doesn't mean there is not a need for them or else the companies you mentioned would not have made them.
I have an airsoft gun that only one manufacturer makes in limited quantity which is in Taiwan, the gun is very unique, but yet many other manufacturers make parts for this gun.. Why? because even though there is not a high demand for the parts, they realize that there still is a demand present.
So what is next on Denon's agenda... A 10in scratch mixer? WHY? There are already about a half dozen made by every other company out there... So if you add up about 6 made by American DJ, about 6 by Numark, about 6 by Vestex, About 6 made by Rane, behringer, gemini, need I go on... You got over 30 mixers that you are in competition with...
So lets figure...
Scratch type mixer - high demand - many many alternatives some very cheap all the way up to very expensive
Rotary type mixer - lower demand - few alternatives all very expensive
I am not going to argue with you about this Silvio. But you would think that somewhere in the world there would be, at very least, a pot that would fit the x1500. I mean if you are not going to answer the our needs with a actual rotary at least answer out needs with pots for a mixer we already have (like other companies have done)
I am very confused about the x1500, the reason why I say this is, it is a all around board right? Well you have many house deejay oriented features on it. Which is why I bought it. Yet denon seems to be only catering to the scratch dj's concerns with the board with regaurd to updates and/or future ventures...
As much as I HATE the look of the A&H 92, it has pots... who knows...

It's all about magic numbers here. The Rane, the A&Hs, the Crest, the Bozak (by the way...this one is pretty much considered the holy grail of rotaries), the Urei, etc don't sell that well initially because of price. We're talking $1499 for a Rane MP2016/XP2016 setup, $1100 for the Crest, $1599 for the Xone 92, $8000 for a full Xone V6 setup, $1200 for a Bozak (used), $1100 for a Urei 1620 (used), $3000 for a minimal Phazon setup.
However, drop the price to around $700-$1100 for the full Rane setup and it sells like hot cakes on ebay.com. It's hard to find a Bozak or Urei on ebay that isn't already snatched up and the auction exceeding $1000. Throw a Xone 92 rotary on ebay for $1100-$1200 and it'll be gone in a few minutes. The point being here is that it is a matter of how much money people are willing to spend for a product. Currently, there are only 6 rotary mixers (some are switchable between rotary and fader) on the market that are sub-$1000. However, none of these mixers offer a wide array of features, effects, etc. The ADJ DX5R, the Gemini CS19R, Stanton RM line of fader replaceable rotaries, the ESO Rotostar/the Peavey Rotomix, the cheaper Vestax fader replaceable rotaries, and the Numark CM1000-R are all lacking in terms of what they offer the user in terms of layout, functionality, etc. However, at lowered prices, all still sell quite well on ebay. The point behind this is that if Denon were able to come out with a rotary mixer at a reduced price and still offered quality in the mixer, they would indeed sell. There is a rather large market out there, one that hasn't seen a decent product released in years and one that is rearing for something new and innovative.
jayo,
One thing you have to realize is that Denon is largely geared toward the scratch DJ. The entire moving platter is a scratch DJs wet dream whereas a lot of house/trance DJs understand one rather elusive concept...a record has to spin in order to create sound, the only reason why a record moves on a turntable, whereas a CD does not require such movement of the platter. It's also interesting to see something like a fader curve almost become Denon's #1 priority over the last couple of months in satisfying the scratch DJs who were complaining about the curve. Suffice to say that this information was released to the general public rather quickly after the bad review over at skratchworx.com. It's bullocks for the house/trance DJ. It's rather odd that the number of people who suggested a rotary on denondjforums.com outnumbers the number of people who suggested a 10 inch scratch mixer (which in today's market, like you said and like I've said before would simply not be able to compete with the likes of Vestax, Rane, Numark, Stanton and others). The only reason somebody would buy a 10 incher from Denon would be the same reason some people bought the x1500...the "Denon for life" mentality. It appears that the majority of the people who support a scratch mixer from Denon fall into this category on denondjforums.com whereas a good majority of the people who think for themselves just sit back and roll their eyes. It's a lose/lose situation for everybody. Unfortunately, it's the house/trance/techno/electro/progressive DJs who stand the lose the most out of all of it.
Doc
Yes it is really unfortunate for guys like us... I don't play out much anymore, so the lack of funds is a real problem in getting one of the higher end rotaries... Jams often points out rotaries for sale on ebay, but like you said they still go at a very high price even used...
I keep finding my self looking at the picture of the 92 and keep asking myself if I made the right choice in buying my x1500. I really like the x1500 except the lack of rotaries... I know that the A&H is awsome for sound quality but also holds a price tag at least 1 and 1/2 times what I paid...
Doc I thank you for your comments, there are many of us that want a good quality rotary who can't afford the high price of such. We would welcome a company to make a mid to high range product for our enjoyment...

We would welcome a company to make a mid to high range product for our enjoyment...
You already have two to choose from with a lower price tag?
What’s wrong with the Crest & Numark?
Just for the record, I have nothing against making a rotary mixer.
When you have a powerful, but yet small engineering crew like ours, they need to focus on items that will sell to the masses. We are not a giant company like Sony or Panasonic that can afford to have a few dogs of products. Denon as a whole is less than 1/10th their size.
Niche products such as the Pio DVJX1 and rotary mixers wont help us pay our bills.
We must choose our future products wisely to keep the division strong, healthy and profitable in order to continue our leading position with advanced technologies. Slow and Steady wins the race.
I was going to say something but I will not... :(
WELL WHERE TO START....
As you all know I want a Denon Rotary... But there is none...
Not even pots for the x-1500...
Well I got tired of waiting so I said screw it I will build my own...
So I broke out my favorite building materials...
What is that you ask????

And after further thought... It's not rocket science, well maybe a little, but come on Silvio, how hard can it be to add knobs instead of faders on the X-1500. Make it an option like the Pio DJM3k.
redd
dj_redd,
One of the major problems in adding pots to my understanding is the whole channel fader start. They cannot find a pot that will work with that feature (unless one is engineered and custom built which is a venture that denon will not take on at this time)
However I would be more than happy to have a software update that would render the channel fader start nonfunctional if that means a normal pot could be implemented...

Thanks for the welcoming party, I really want to see pics of how Jayo did that mod for the knobs on the X1500. Any pros or cons about it as well, and what lego set did he go purchase to do the mod. :D
Matt... I will post better pics of the mod soon... It works pretty good except it is hard to see where your level is (no marking on the knob)... As for what lego set... I don't really know... I have been collecting legos since I was a small child... So I have boxes of them... But a Technic lego set of a decent size is a must in order to get the amount of gears needed to make it work... It takes 4 large and 4 small, 12 shafts, (8 shorter and 4 longer) 4 or 8 wheels, 8 shaft spacers (the ones that are as long as a single lego is wide) and 16 of the shaft spacers that have the groove for pulleys that are about half the with of a single lego (they also have the teeth to interlock them) and 8 of the black rubber bands, any rubber band of the same size will do...
Hope this helps this is some of the stuff needed of the top of my head...
My creation could have been built much better but it was a first time build and ask MDX or Digital, I built it after going to the bar at about 2:00 in the morning...

Behind the Wheels of Steel,
You probably won't have to do it for your Vestax seeing as most of the Vestax 3 and 4 channel mixers already have rotary options for them.
Click here to see them or purchase them (http://www.bananas.com/productdetail.asp/pid_4280/productname_Vestax-DF27-Rotary-Dial-Fader-for-the-PMC27,-270a-and-PCV275)

True, but having to buy 3, and then a completly new faceplate, or frontpanel (whatever you call it) adds up, and any spare money i have is going twords getting a second cd table. Having one dn-s3000, and a tape deck is not fun...

Bigdaddy,
Legos are the ultimate building tools... I will never get rid of my legos... I hope to give them to my children if I ever have any... For they promote creativity and thinking outside the box...
If I ever have kids they will have legos and a PC not nintendo or gameboy, xbox, etc.
I still play with legos from time to time, and I am 28 years old, why???Because I feel it forces me to look at different perspectives, and it is very relaxing... I am scared to death of losing my creativity and I.Q. (they say it goes down with age because people become to close minded)
So that is the reason I still have lego, and face it... THEY ARE A LOT OF FUN... I wish I had more of them...
As to the StarWars you hit a sore subject for my mom sold all my StarWars figures when I was at college (they were worth a lot of money)

So Jayo, since you proved it could be done, has there been any dialogue between you and Sil. Will Denon finally consider doing a Rotary X-15k vers.? This really sucks man, all these new f'n scratch mixers they came out w/and no thought being put into getting a real mixer into clubs. The X-15k has potential but only with pots. I have no doubt that if Pio puts out the rumored 4 channel 909 in 2k5... And puts it out with rotary options (ala A&H's Xone-92), it'll sell like hotcakes! We could very well see, not only CDJ's as a club standard, but also Pio 909's.
redd
Redd,
I haven't talked to Silvio in quite a while... I don't believe Denon will make a pot kit for the x1500 but making your own will cost under 30 bucks.

I think it sucks that it was built w/o effects, or that Denon didn't come out w/a Rotary kit for the X-1500, but then again none of the Rotary's I've worked with, nor my personal MP2016, have effects and I'm perfect fine with it.
